Most knitters, crochet-ers, weavers, and other crafters have an abundance of unused yarn they refer to as their “stash.” The weaving craft kits were initially conceived as a way to “stash bust” and for people to explore another craft form in a simple, low commitment way.

During the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, more shape loom designs were created and shipped with necessary warp thread, weft yarn, craft needle, and instruction sheet to ease the boredom of lockdown at home without having to go out to the store for supplies. The launch of the rainbow design coincided with a movement to display rainbows in windows to cheer on the healthcare workers.

Design optimization opportunities from these kits included:

  • Loom Frame Details - Figuring out optimal size and placement of the holes for the warp thread required some iterating. Structural integrity and sizing for maximum yield on a laser cut sheet were also addressed.

  • Instruction Sheet - Providing enough guidance to warp the looms and start weaving while leaving plenty of room for creative expression.

  • Batch Production - Finding efficient ways to measure and package consistent lengths of yarn for each kit, providing a comfortable amount of material for crafters to fill their weavings.

  • Packaging - Recognizing that Canada Post’s shipping rates are much higher for Parcels than Oversized Lettermail, I made sure these could ship in a reliably protected way while staying within the maximum dimensions of Oversized Lettermail.
